Wonderful Wales: Things to do This Summer

Exploring exotic climes can be great fun, but have you ever considered a staycation to wonderful Wales? Here are a few must-see attractions.

Exploring exotic climes can be great fun, and it can create picture perfect memories, but have you ever thought about getting to know good old Blighty a little better? In particular, the wonderful Wales! There is so much to see and do, and it’s so much more than hills, boozing and rugby (though these things are great too … obviously).
If you are planning a staycation this summer, pay wondrous Wales a visit. Here are a few must see and do activities to inspire you:

For Outdoorsy Types

Folly

Do you enjoy getting out there in the wilderness and exploring the real (and natural) country? Then pay the Brecon Beacons National Park a trip, and complete the magical Sgwd yr Eira walk.

Sgwd yr Eira

Sgwd yr Eira is one of five beautiful waterfalls along a relatively relaxed woodland walk. Translated from Welsh, the name of this waterfall means ‘Fall of the Snow’, but don’t worry, there is nothing icy about this place. It is very cool though!

Walk down the winding pathway into a Lord of the Rings-esque world, with flowing water and plenty of moss. And with a little scramble you can walk right behind the fast flowing waterfall. The shallow waters here make the perfect spot for a bit of paddling in the summer sun. It’s idyllic!

For Thrill Seekers

Looking for something a little more exciting and fast paced? Then try coasteering in Anglesey. Holy Island, in North Wales, has the most spectacular coastline, making it the perfect place for your wet and wild adventures. It’s also home to the largest sea cave in Wales, which is ripe for exploration.

holy island

With secluded sands, craggy cliffs and deep clear waters, this area really makes you want to throw yourself into the adventure.

For adults only

If you would rather stay indoors, and you enjoy a tipple or two, pay a visit to Penderyn Distillery and try their superb world class whiskey. Take a guided tour around the distillery and learn how the amazing alcohol is made, before tasting samples and maybe even taking part in one of their master classes. Don’t forget to bring us a bottle back!

For the whole family

Family fun days out don’t come better than a jolly day out at Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo. It’s fun for all ages – even the adults. You’ll have a roaring good time, as they’ve recently got some new residents: a pride of lions!

Start your day in the Folly Zoo and say hello to the giraffes, penguins and zebras, before taking a stroll over to the Jolly Barn and learning how to milk a cow or how to bottle feed a lamb. After a hearty lunch, it’s over to the giant indoor vintage funfair (the largest in Europe) where you can all battle it out on the dodgems, spin on the carousel and take in a show by the resident magician.

Finally, end your day in one of the seven adventure play areas. Themed from pirates to enchanted woods, our favourite is the Carousel Woods, as there is seating and a café for mum and dad.

This is a full, fun day out, perfect for young and big kids alike.

There is something for everyone on a staycation in Wales. What do you think? Will you be visiting?

Folly Farm Adventure Park and Zoo is a TripAdvisor favourite family day out based in beautiful West Wales. It’s the perfect place for an educational and fun day out, where you can get up close and personal with wild animals.
